Selenium is an essential trace mineral incorporated into proteins as the amino acid selenocysteine, forming a class of proteins known as selenoproteins. It is a required cofactor for several critical antioxidant enzyme systems and thyroid hormone metabolism enzymes. Research covers its roles in antioxidant signaling, thyroid hormone pathway regulation, immune function, DNA integrity research, and its interactions with aging-related cellular pathways.

Selenoprotein & Glutathione Peroxidase Research Studies investigate selenium's incorporation into glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzymes, exploring their role in reducing hydrogen peroxide and lipid hydroperoxides, antioxidant signaling pathway research, and cellular oxidative stress protection.
Thyroid Hormone Signaling Research Research examines selenium's role in iodothyronine deiodinase enzyme function, investigating T4-to-T3 conversion signaling pathways, thyroid hormone activation and inactivation research, and thyroid gland antioxidant defense pathway investigations.
Immune Function Pathway Research Studies explore selenium's effects on T-cell proliferation signaling, natural killer cell activity research, cytokine pathway modulation, and its role in supporting both innate and adaptive immune response signaling.
DNA Integrity & Repair Pathway Research Researchers investigate selenium's role in protecting DNA from oxidative damage signaling, its interaction with DNA repair enzyme pathways, and research on its potential effects on genomic stability maintenance research.
Thioredoxin Reductase Signaling Research Studies examine selenium's function in thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) enzymes, exploring their roles in redox signaling regulation, ribonucleotide reductase pathway research, and NF-κB signaling modulation in immune pathway research.

Essential trace mineral. Both deficiency and excess can be harmful; therapeutic range is narrow. Available as a supplement. Not medical advice.
