SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin — a phospholipid critical to mitochondrial architecture and function. It is studied for its role in mitochondrial integrity research, cellular energy pathway signaling, and protection against oxidative stress. Clinical trials have evaluated it in heart failure and other conditions involving mitochondrial dysfunction.
